Total knee replacement in Spain (TKR)

Partial knee replacement in Spain

As its name suggests, this operation involves completely replacing the knee joint with an artificial prosthesis. This procedure is generally recommended for patients with severe joint wear, such as in cases of advanced osteoarthritis or significant cartilage damage.

At Incot, we support patients throughout the entire process — from the initial assessment to determine the type of surgery you need, to the knee operation itself, post-operative follow-up, and recovery. We also assist with the organisation of your travel and accommodation.

On the other hand, a partial knee replacement is a less invasive alternative used when the damage to the knee is limited to a single part of the joint. In this case, only the affected area is replaced, preserving the rest of the knee’s natural structure. This technique usually allows for a quicker recovery, less blood loss during surgery, and a shorter rehabilitation period.

    Knee replacement surgery FAQs

    What is knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery, as the name suggests, is an operation in which the damaged parts of the knee are replaced with artificial components, usually made of metal or plastic. The aim of the procedure is to eliminate or reduce pain and improve joint mobility. It is also known as knee arthroplasty.

Who is a candidate for knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery is recommended for patients whose knees are severely worn. One of the most common reasons is severe osteoarthritis (degeneration of the cartilage), although it may also be recommended for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, serious injuries or fractures, and other conditions that cause significant pain when walking, climbing stairs or standing up.

What is the difference between total and partial knee replacement?

Knee replacement surgery may be total or partial. In a total knee replacement, the entire knee joint is replaced, including the damaged surfaces of the femur, tibia and patella. This procedure is used when wear and tear is so extensive that it affects the whole knee joint, or more than one part of it. In a partial knee replacement, only the damaged part of the knee is replaced. The knee is divided into three compartments: medial, lateral and patellofemoral. Once the damaged compartment has been identified, only that section is replaced. The choice between one type of operation and the other does not depend on how much cartilage is damaged, or on the patient’s age or mobility, but rather on how much of the knee is affected. At Incot, your specialist orthopaedic surgeon will carry out tests such as MRI scans or X-rays to assess the extent of the damage and recommend the most suitable procedure for your case.

How long does knee replacement surgery take?

The exact duration of the surgery can never be known for certain. The surgery usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours, but this depends on the type of surgery (total, partial or prosthesis revision) as well as other factors, such as how your body reacts. Furthermore, you will need to arrive around two hours before the surgery for pre-operative preparation and anaesthesia. In addition, you will need to spend between 1 and 3 hours in the immediate recovery area after the surgery.

    How long does recovery take?

Recovery is a gradual process and depends largely on how the individual responds, as well as on the amount of rehabilitation carried out. That is why, at Incot, we begin rehabilitation from the outset to ensure the best possible results in the shortest possible time. Recovery after knee replacement surgery usually takes between three and six months, although in some cases it may take up to a year.

When can I return to work or travel after the knee replacement surgery?

This depends on the type of surgery you have and the nature of your job. If you have a desk-based job or similar, many people are able to return to work within two to three weeks. However, if your job requires you to be on your feet, for example in sales or working as a chef, teacher or nurse, it usually takes between four and six weeks. If your job involves heavy physical work, such as construction, warehouse work or heavy cleaning, it may take between six and twelve weeks, or even longer. At Incot, we can give you a more accurate estimate based on your profession, the procedure you are undergoing and your progress during recovery. We can also explain the next steps in your recovery process.

Is physiotherapy necessary after knee replacement surgery?

ysiotherapy is essential for restoring mobility in your knee. That is why, from the very beginning at Incot, we will support you with a guided physiotherapy programme in your room, delivered in English, so that you can begin your recovery straight away.
